The representation of the natural world and phenomenal events executed in a classically realistic manner have always been of primary importance to me in painting. The inspiration for the 'Phosphorous Works' came from my desire to distill the chaotic formations of nature from this objective goal of painting mimetic pictures of natural phenomena per se. I am allowing the naturalism of intricate textures to generate themselves without brushwork manipulation, in a sense it is ultra-naturalism. Microcosmically it is guided by the chaotic distribution of the pigment in a liquified state and the final effect of the drying process. The material is guided by aesthetic decision making into a more intentional design. These choices determine the macro-compositional end result.
Technically, these are paintings made with a series of thin glazes. However, my intention is to deconstruct traditional glazing techniques. I work with the veils of liquified paint with a focus on atmospheres and condensation. As pigments build up in certain areas, the presence of form begins to emerge. The first twelve black works were focused on light and shadow and the generation of images. However, the metaphor of solid objects forming from the relative density of material is the guiding principle in the three final, color works presented here; Eden, Monad and Mysterium Revelation.
