The Nesting the Shadow Drawing Mechanism is a general designation encompassing the entire autamatic drawing process (Automatism and Automatic drawing as given by André Masson and Austin Osman Spare). It is an open ended contextual framework for the groupings and series of automatic drawings.
These works are initiated with the more passive of the two hands in order to override the compulsory tracts of habit and default ways of thinking. In this way the work is begun with 'no mind'.
As forms begin to emerge I exert more deliberate control by rendering light, shadow and space. As in all of my work, the subtle shift between atmosphere and object are of primary interest.
The intention of the entire Nesting the Shadow Drawing Mechanism workings is to engage the Shadow (the shadow aspect of the unconscious as described by Carl Jung) and ultimately integrate the unconscious with the conscious mind.
